On Work

Obviously, the term work can have a multitude of different meanings; working at a job, "working the corner," working a poker table, working towards an objective, or even working on a psychological disorder. My definition of it is sort of all-encompassing: work is the act of putting forth effort (be it physical, emotional, mental or otherwise) to obtain a goal. I believe that work is the only way to have and maintain a functioning and regular society. I'm not saying that every individual in that society must have a traditional "job" and drag their lazy carcasses to work five days a week, but to avoid chaos and complete and utter destruction, the large majority of the population must exude some energy to better themselves and the societies around them so the world can keep on turning. Even though I absolutely despise working, I understand that by participating in it I am doing my part to keep the economy healthy, the consumers happy, and my butt in nice, fresh clothes.

At the same time, I wonder what would happen if everyone just stopped. We simply put down our pens, guns, and wads of money and Just Said No to established society as we know it. In a sort of anarchistic (and possibly a little morbid) way, I think that would be the world's greatest experiment known to date-- I'd call it, "Let's See What Happens When We All Stop Being Sheep and Live, Dammit." I don't know how well this idea will go over with the Republicans (that word being capitalized with hesitation) of the world, but who cares? I'm sure they'll find some way to steal off of other people-- that's what they're good at, right? Anyway, this enormous endeavor would start off with the wonderful and cataclysmic destruction of the world's financial institutions and evil corporations (ala "Fight Club", without the annoyance of multiple personalities). All economic troubles are wiped away; in fact, the concept of currency would hopefully be forgotten altogether in time.
